TREASURE HUNTING IN THE OLD NATCHEZ DISTRICT

JUST THIS PAST WEEKEND I HAD A CHANCE TO TRAVEL TO THE OLD NATCHEZ DISTRICT WHEN PRESENTED WITH  AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT AN OLD HOME SITE.  THE AREA WAS IN AMITE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI JUST WEST OF LIBERTY OFF THE OLD 24 HIGHWAY.  NO THE CHIMNEY YOU SEE PICTURED HERE WAS NOT ON THE SITE.  IN THIS AREA OF MISSISSIPPI MOST ALL FIREPLACES IN THE 1800'S WERE MADE FROM BRICKS MADE BY SLAVES.  HOWEVER THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF A LEAST 3 FIREPLACES ON THIS OLD HOME SITE SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN A LARGE HOUSE IN ITS DAY.  I USED MY METAL DETECTOR TO SEARCH THE OLD GROUNDS, DIGGING UP MANY OLD CANS AND SQUARE NAILS AND A FEW PLOW POINTS AND ONE HORSE SHOE.  NOT VERY EXCITING.  THEN MOVING DOWNHILL FROM THE HOME SITE I FOUND AN DEPRESSION IN THE GROUND AND THOUGHT IT TO BE FROM AN DUG WELL THAT HAD FILLED IN OVER THE MANY YEARS.  AS IT TURNED OUT, THIS WAS THE SITE OF THE OUTHOUSE.  THEY WERE ALMOST ALWAYS DOWN HILL FROM THE WELL AND THE HOME SITE.  MAKES SENSE WHEN YOU STOP TO THINK ABOUT IT.  MY FRIEND AND I BEGAN DIGGING IN THE SMALL SINK AND CHECKING THE DIRT AS WE DUG.  THE REPORTS WE WERE GETTING WERE FAINT, BUT NEVERTHELESS CLEAR AND EVENTUALLY WE DID FIND 3 OLD COINS---ALL SILVER.  ALAS, NOT GOLD.  TURNS OUT THAT SOMETIME WHEN A PERSON USED THE OUTHOUSE THAT HE WOULD ACCIDENTALLY DROP SOMETHING OUT OF HIS PANTS WHEN SITTING ON THE WOODEN THRONE.  READ UP ON THIS WHEN I GOT BACK HOME AND MUCH TO MY SURPRISE LEARNED THAT OLD TOILET SITES ARE A GOOD BET FOR FINDING COINS.  MY NEW FOUND COINS ARE NOT WORTH MUCH, BUT THE EXCITEMENT OF THE DIG WAS PRICELESS.  ONE LESSON TO BE LEARNED HERE IS THAT COINS CAN BE FOUND, EVEN IN PILES OF S**T!
