FINALLY I WAS ABLE TO FIND THE TIME TO GET AWAY FOR A DAY. THERE WAS AN OLD HOME SITE ABOUT 40 MILES AWAY THAT I WANTED TO CHECK OUT. IT WAS IN AMITE COUNTY MISSISSIPPI, AND I KNEW ABOUT IT FROM MY CHILDHOOD DAYS. THE SITE WAS ONCE HOME TO AN OLD PLANTATION BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR. IT EVEN HAD AN OLD SLAVE CEMETERY, ALTHOUGH ALL THE MARKERS ARE NOW GONE. ANYWAY TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT AFTER DIGGING UP MANY OLD RUSTY NAILS AND TIN CANS I GOT A GOOD SOUND ON MY METAL DETECTOR AND AFTER SOME DIGGING I CAME ACROSS YET ANOTHER CAN, BUT RIGHT NEXT TO IT WAS AN OLD BOTTLE, A MEAN A REAL OLD BOTTLE. IT WAS AN OLD CAPTAINS FLASK DATING BACK TO THE EARLY 1800's. THAT HOWEVER WAS JUST THE BEGINNING. AS I QUICKLY DISCOVERED I HAVE FOUND THE OLD GARBAGE DUMP FOR THE PLANTATION. MOST OF THE BOTTLES RECOVERED WERE BROKEN, BUT I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER 6 INTACT ONES FROM THAT PERIOD. I'M STILL IN THE PROCESS OF IDENTIFYING THEM. THAT ALONE WOULD HAVE MADE FOR A GREAT DAY. BUT I CONTINUED MY SEARCH ON THE SITE OF THE OLD HOUSE. I KNEW THE SPOT BECAUSE BRICKS FROM THE OLD CHIMNEY WERE NUMEROUS. I GOT MANY FALSE ALARMS FROM NAILS, CANS AND OTHER WORTHLESS METALS. BUT FINALLY, A PICKED UP A BLEEP THAT LEAD TO SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING. AFTER DIGGING FOR ONLY ABOUT 10" I FOUND A COIN OF THAT PERIOD. AN OLD HALF CENT COIN DATED 1851. THE COIN ITSELF IS NOT VALUABLE, BUT IT SURE MADE MY HEART BEAT FASTER WHEN I FIRST PICKED IT UP. JUST KNOWING THAT SOMEONE HAD HELD THIS COIN SOME 150 YEARS AGO WAS ENOUGH FOR ME. I WILL GO BACK AGAIN ALTHOUGH THE WALK TO THE OLD PLACE IS ABOUT 1/2MILE FROM THE ROAD THROUGH SOME VERY ROUGH WOODS. AS A FOOTNOTE, I WOULD LIKE TO ADD, THERE IS AN OLD STORY MY GRANDFATHER US TO TELL ABOUT YANKEE GOLD. LEGEND SAYS THAT UNION TROOPS WERE BRING UP SOME GOLD FROM NEW ORLEANS AND WERE KILLED BY CONFEDERATES NEAR THAT SAME OLD PLANTATION, BUT NOT BEFORE THEY MANAGED TO BURY THE GOLD COINS. HECK, YOU NEVER KNOW---I JUST MIGHT GET LUCKY ON MY NEXT TRIP. WITH EVERY SCOOP OF DIRT I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE I'M CLOSER TO THE TREASURE. SOMETIMES I THINK THE REAL TREASURE IS IN THE HUNT AND NOT THE FIND.
